Located on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea—east of Cuba and Jamaica, and south of The Bahamas—Haiti is the most populous country in the Caribbean, with an estimated 11.8 million people. Its capital, Port-au-Prince, is the heart of the nation. Despite its vibrant culture and resilient people, Haiti faces immense challenges, with one of the world’s lowest GDP per capita and the distinction of being the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

The past decade has brought deep suffering. The 2010 earthquake claimed approximately 300,000 lives and left 1.6 million homeless. A devastating cholera outbreak followed, and from 2018 to 2021, mass protests and soaring fuel prices added to the turmoil. In July 2021, the assassination of the president plunged the country into further instability, followed by another earthquake just a month later. Today, with the collapse of the government, armed gangs continue to wreak havoc across the nation.

OM in the Caribbean has faithfully supported a small school in Haiti over the years, helping with property repairs and ongoing needs. Despite the unrest of the past two years, and while many schools have closed, this school—by God’s grace—has remained open and continues to serve its community. OM’s passion is to keep helping, even in the face of adversity.
