Switzerland

Despite a rich history of Christianity, many Swiss are falling away from official religion in Switzerland.

When people think of Switzerland, they picture chocolate, fondue, the Alps, precision watches and global icons like Heidi, Calvin and the Red Cross. But beyond the postcard-perfect image lies a nation of complexity and opportunity.

With a population of almost nine million, over one-third of Swiss residents have a foreign background. Immigrants and refugees from around the world come seeking a better future, making Switzerland one of Europe’s most multicultural nations.

The country has four official languages—German, French, Italian and Romansh—along with a rich tapestry of dialects. Though known for its wealth, Switzerland faces deep social challenges, including family breakdown, substance abuse and violence.

Despite a strong Christian heritage, many are leaving the state churches. Evangelical Christians make up only a small percentage—equal to the Muslim population. New Age, Buddhism and Hinduism are also growing.

Founded in 1976, OM Switzerland serves through two main ministries: home offices in the German- and French-speaking regions, and Focus Switzerland, which reaches out primarily to migrants within the country.
