We honor the life of George Verwer, our founder. Read More
Tran Van Vuong and Le Thi Khuyen lived a simple life on Minh Chau Island, Vietnam—catching crabs, fish, oysters and whatever else they could find to make ends meet. Each week, they traveled by boat to the mainland to sell their catch. Tran Van struggled with unhealthy habits, and his wife, feeling uncertain about their future, made the difficult decision to leave.
But everything changed when she met a follower of Jesus who shared the gospel with her. Le Thi gave her life to Christ, and when she returned home and shared her new faith with Tran Van, he too believed. In June 2024, the couple was baptized and began attending a church a little over 12 miles from their home.
Tran Van reflected, “We had been blessed for a long time by catching fish and shrimp that God had made. We didn’t know Him then, but now we do.”
Their faith journey didn’t stop there. They began praying for their son, who worked at the local port, to come to know Jesus. Through a connection with OM’s Ha Long church planting team, their son also accepted Christ.
Even though Minh Chau Island is a two-hour boat ride from the mainland, Tran Van and Le Thi faithfully attend church and find encouragement in their growing community of believers. The church planting team is now preparing to visit the island to share the gospel with other fishermen.

When Typhoon Yagi hit the island, the couple was left cold and hungry for two days. Their boat sank, and they lost everything on board. “All we can do is give thanks to God that we are alive,” Tran Van said. The cost to repair the boat was overwhelming—around $7,000 USD.
OM in Vietnam and the local church stepped in with practical help, including a $400 USD gift toward repairs. Tran Van was able to fix a smaller boat and return to work. “We were very encouraged by this small present,” he said.
Since the storm, OM has helped nine families with financial aid, built five new homes and distributed 120 “love packs” filled with essential supplies.
