We honor the life of George Verwer, our founder. Read More
It was a Tuesday in February. Nadia, an art professor in Kharkiv, Ukraine, was busy getting ready for an exhibition at the art museum. Her son’s 17th birthday was also coming up. The family Christmas tree was still up, because they loved the cheerful glow of the lights.
A normal week. Like you might be having this week. Then, in the early hours of the morning, the unthinkable happened. Ukraine was invaded. Nadia’s city was bombed. Many died in their homes. Nadia’s home wasn’t hit, but the windows were blown out by nearby explosions. Then tanks rolled in to the city. It was clear to Nadia: It was not safe.
Nadia and her son made their way to a shelter. She intended to stay for one night before returning home. That “one night” turned into two weeks spent underground in a subway station. Nadia and her son fled westward, seeking asylum in neighboring Poland. That was three years ago. They never returned home.
It’s been a tough three years. Grief, loss and uncertainty. But Nadia found something she never expected: hope. Through the kindness of Jesus followers she met along the way, she discovered a hope no war could take away. “My world was shaken,” she
shares, “but God became my everything.” More than 10 million people in Ukraine have been displaced by the war. It is the biggest humanitarian crisis in modern Europe.
Because of your compassion and partnership, OM workers have been able to stand with Nadia and others in Poland, as well as inside Ukraine. This expression of Christian love is made possible by faithful friends like you. Together, we’re bringing His presence into places of deep need. Pray for emotional healing for those who have experienced trauma, grief and displacement.
