El Salvador’s six and a half million people are a nation of great diversity and challenge. 20% of its nationals live abroad and send money home to help alleviate the country’s poverty. Over 60% of this small, but densely populated nation work in service industries. Income inequality has led to vast differences between rich and poor, affecting levels of education. Over one quarter of the population is under 15, with high unemployment for the under 25s. This has brought an increasing problem with young people forming gangs and taking drugs.
“Many people in El Salvador have heard about God,” a team member said. “But that doesn’t always mean they know who Jesus is. Or help them in life choices. God knows when to bring people together and help them understand His goodness. Some people bring awareness, others work alongside to demonstrate His love in action, then God puts it all together.”
Officially, there is religious freedom in the country. Figures state that 94% of the nation are Christian, historically mainly Roman Catholic, with hundreds of people having yet to hear the good news of Jesus for the first time. There are actively thriving churches in all but one of the 10 people groups, encouraging other indigenous churches to grow and mature. Followers of Jesus aim to disciple young believers in a deep personal relationship with God and reach out to others who do not yet know Him, even to send workers into other parts of the world as visible expressions of God’s love.
